Troublesome Protestors: An Ethics Lesson

Wake up, people! Mandatory quarantine is contemporary slavery and we need to reopen the country now! Now, reread that. Does that even make sense? How can one compare the sale, exploitation, and dehumanization of human beings to being obligated to stay home in order to stop the spread of a deadly virus? It seems like these people have already been infected with a virus because no person in their right mind would ever compare slavery to quarantine orders.

Quarantine protesters, who are white and heavily armed, have been parading in their towns and state capitals in an attempt to have lockdown orders lifted. These orders have been put into place to help slow the rapid spread of the deadly respiratory virus, COVID-19. These senseless acts of rebellion show that many people do not care about the lives and safety of the people around them. While it is necessary to reopen, we must do so in a safe manner which is something protesters seem to be overlooking.

President Trump has been encouraging these protests, asking protesters last month in Minnesota, Michigan, and Virginia to “LIBERATE” their states, despite precautionary measures put into place by his administration. These states, run by Democratic governors, are crucial to Trump’s reelection and his encouragement of protests in these states show that he is more concerned about politics than handling the virus appropriately.

Those protesting are failing to realize that the reason we are in this situation is because the President was unprepared and downplayed the seriousness of the virus. January 21st, the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in the United States. Instead of preparing for moderate and drastic measures, Trump assured the American people that, “It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” Since that statement, the United States has reached 1,622,670 cases and 97,087 deaths while the true toll remains higher.

Mitch McConnell even alleged that the Obama administration left no pandemic response outline. While he admitted that this accusation was false, the Trump administration had over three years to create their own response if they felt the 69-page playbook left by the Obama administration was not up to par.

This virus has revealed the lack of sympathy and concern Trump has for the growing numbers of deaths and cases. While he is encouraging his supporters to protest his administration’s safety guidelines, he has not shown the same support for the Black Lives Matter movement; a movement with a goal to preserve lives. Black lives.

In a 2016 Fox News interview, Trump denounced the movement saying, “I think they’re calling death to the police”. He reduced the movement, advocating to end the unjust brutality towards Black people, to merely “calling death to the police”. Statistics show that police killed at least 573 Black people between 2015 and 2016, while 11 police officers were killed on three separate occasions in 2014 and 2016 in protest of police brutality. While all of these deaths are tragic, in looking at Trump’s support of these quarantine protests and his slandering of the Black Lives Matter movement, the stances he has taken on both issues is unethical.

Many of these quarantine protesters have been found to be affiliated with white supremacist groups and have flaunted Trump 2020 signs and confederate flags. The confederate flag is a symbol of racism and American history that should not be celebrated. While people who wave the flag claim it is a symbol of “southern heritage”, the Confederacy tried to break away from the United States which is as un-American as it gets. While the South did want to preserve their economy, in order to do so they had to preserve slavery. Thus the flag is racist and no sign of patriotism.

Besides the fact that these protestors are racist, the reopening they are calling for is at the expense of thousands of lives. This is what Trump supports. However, he will not stand for the gratuitous killings of Black people in his own country. Unarmed Black protestors fighting for their lives are seen as violent and troublesome whereas heavily armed white supremacists fighting for an unsafe and unethical reopening are commended and branded “very good people.”

The leader of this country must stop ignoring the science and facts of these consequential issues, as lives are continuously being lost at the expense of his stupidity.
